Headache Essential Oils Blend

I use undiluted peppermint essential oil for headaches because  I just find that they’re more effective that way (urmmm, disclaimer: For me, it ‘works’ at ‘distracting me’ from the head pain, not so much in the sense that it takes away the head pain – in most cases).

I knowwww the recommendation in aromatherapy is to never use undiluted essential oils on skin because they’re super potent can cause irritation (not to mention, wayyyy more expensive on the pocketbook AND environment to use if it’s undiluted), but I also get really, really, really intense, painful headaches :(.

So, the choice is yours – dilute your oils or use them neat (that’s aromatherapy lingo for “using EOs straight up on your skin at 100% full strength, without dilution”) based on your own reactions to essential oils.  To be honest, I think I’ve used so much of this, that my forehead has grown extra thick peppermint-proof skin – because when I use it on the back of my neck, I can really feel the burn, LOL.

As a side note, when you use a rollerball, it tends to release more oil than if you just use it from a dropper bottle – so you might take that into consideration when choosing to dilute or not dilute.

And since we’re on disclaimers here, do not apply so much of this stuff that it drips into your eyes.  That’ll definitely burn (diluted or undiluted) and it’ll need to be thoroughly rinsed out (several times!) and it’ll still continue to burn for a while.  Yes, this is written from experience.  Yes, that burning eye sensation DID distract me from my headache – though not the way I intended it to, LOLOLOL

UNDILUTED

Ingredients:
  • Peppermint Essential Oil
  • Lavender Essential Oil
  • Frankincense Essential Oil
  • Rollerball tube (I reused mine from previous EO purchases/gifts)
Preparation:
  • Carefully pop off the rollerball top (I use a box cutter knife to pry it open).
  • Fill 2/3 of your rollerball tube with peppermint.
  • Based on the remaining 1/3 tube, fill up to the halfway mark with lavender, then fill the rest with frankincense.
  • Click in the rollerball, close off the top, give it a good shake and it is ready to use.
To Use:
  • Apply to forehead, temples (be careful not to get any near the eyes!), occiput, or sides of the neck.

DILUTED

Ingredients:
  • Grapeseed carrier oil
  • Peppermint Essential Oil
  • Lavender Essential Oil
  • Frankincense Essential Oil
  • Rollerball tube (I reused mine from previous EO purchases/gifts)
Preparation:
  • Carefully pop off the rollerball top (I use a box cutter knife to pry it open).
  • Fill 1/2 way with grapefruit seed carrier oil.
  • Based on the remaining tube, fill 2/3rds of the way up with peppermint.
Notes:
  • I like using a rollerball in this case – but if you have empty dropper bottle(s), you can use those instead – take a couple of drops onto your fingertips and massage it in.
